Heh, good one DDOriginally Posted by Devastatin Dave
I don't mind the google ads but I found one that does piss me off
From the main page (With all the news and stuff) when you click the message boards link you get a sponser message..........I'm ok with that too but when the sponser is Winfix and it keeps asking you to install it on your PC.....That annoys me
But still..........If all the new ads get a faster service for downloads then thats cool
i havent used the main site in ages, it's either the forums (bookmarked) or the BT (ditto)
Really Akuma, instead of complaining about how "gay" the ads are, try paying the bills for this website. I'll be waiting for my Paypal payment of $1105 from you.. Thank you very much. On another note, I've got PM's from people recently saying that the forums server was popping up Server Busy messages. This is inspite of us having a seperate server for the forums... Here's the server configuration:
QTY Hardware Component
1 Gigabyte \ SuperCeleronMarkII \ GA-8LD533
1 Intel \ Celeron \ 2.4 Ghz
2 Transcend \ 512MB \ DDR266
1 Unknown \ Onboard \ IDE
1 Seagate \ 80GB:IDE:7200RPM Barracuda \ ST380011a
Installed Software
- Urchin Urchin 5
- Redhat Enterprise Linux - OS ES 3.0
- DarkORB CPanel 6
Bandwidth Utilization / Network Connectivity
1. Allowed Bandwidth Usage: 1200GB (Bandwidth type: RAW)
Hardware Object's Upstream Connection: ae50b-cat2950t-24-1 (172.16.210.246) Port: FastEthernet0/11
This server costs us $109 per month. The ads at the bottom on the default style (Casino ads) pay us $120 per month. So yay, I make a $11 profit! Enough to save up for a lifetime and get us a new server.
I'm planning to get a better server for the forums, the downloads and the site, but for this we need cash and we don't have so much of it. Sure, you'll see ads, but these are just text ads, they hardly bother you and in a few minutes (probably by now) your mind's eye will learn how to block them in any case...
Also, about the ads being spyware or leading to slot machines, the ads are based on the content on that page, google generates the ads in realtime so I have no control over what they're showing here..
If you would like to continue getting server busy messages and getting duplicate post errors then please feel free to say so and I'll leave the forums without any ads. I am the last person to want ads on the forums, just to make that clear. And if you're so keen on going and watching TV since these ads are so much like your text based tv commercials (lucky you...) please feel free to indulge yourself.
GundamGuy and Skinner8, you're not seeing the ads because they're only visible to the following Usergroups:
Unregistered
Registered
Administrators (so that I can see them..)
polobunny, I would exempt you and move you to a seperate usergroup anyway for your contribution through Paypal. I could also randomize the ads on every page so that they show up after any random post (just once) but I'm sure there's a shock factor to that and I didn't really want to do that. About putting them at the bottom, we get paid here for Ad Clicks not ad views, so people have got to see the ads and if they like something or are interested in something, are to go through to the advertisers page..
hey, i know every little bit helps, so how bout a PM with the addy for paypal, and i'll send you my grand total of 14 cents?
Haha. Thanks.Originally Posted by polobunny

Then I realised that this place is expensive, and I appreciate the fact that it doesn't cost any of us anything to participate here.
Heh, I highly doubt I've ever consumed nearly that much bandwidth downloading stuff from here to amount to such a ridiculous figure. As a matter of fact, I haven't gotten anything from the main site since I initially joined. I'm fully aware of the cost of having games on the server and whatnot. I dunno, some of those ads seem legit, and some don't, mainly anything that revolves around gambling. But ya know whatever works. I guess I shouldn't worry bout it that much since I'm not gonna be around much anymore. I've gotten a lot out of this place, and I don't mean just games, mainly info and knowledge about stuff, and even passed a lot of it on to teh n00bs. But I think I have just about had my fill of forums in general. So anyway good luck with the ads thing.Originally Posted by MasJ

I've already sent MasJ some ideas on making $$ off the site (just to pay the bills). Since we have access to so much useful info, I think a $5/yr fee would not be bad. To avoid problems with "da authorities", the tracker should move to a site not related to EP. The Downloads off the main EP page should be removed. (That means GBA/SNES/SegaCD/NeoGeo & just about everything else). And all games should be handled through the tracker and/or the Upload services.
Making these kind of changes would not be expensive and I believe far to the majority of the ppl who visit the site. What is $5/yr when u consider that other sites use spyware & drop ads across most of the pages!?
Come one, I know there are others who can contribute ideas to make EP better and afford its bills. GameSpot & IGN are slowly moving toward more ads & less content for non-paying subscribers. Really good sites like the magic box and RPGclassics have scaled back their graphics-intensive content or gone under altogether. Let's face it, the Internet may be "free" for us but it costs beaucoup bucks to pay for T1 lines. More users=more bandwith needed.
You cannot defy the laws of science! The more you consume, the more expensive life becomes. Time that everyone chips in a fair share and quickly.
