Now we know how viral bunny signatures really spread.
Well, a few years ago I would have undoubtedly voted for the Sega mascot...however having grown out of being a Sega fanboy and having enjoyed SMW thoroughly and in its near entireity my choice isnt quite as clear cut as it once was. Both series are great examples of their ilk, and yet strangely both series have started to fade out slightly over the last couple of years. They are quite the gameplay innovaters they once were, and whilst as long as theyre respective companies continue to exist they will too I cannot help but feel tired by the ongoing antics of these two characters.
Maybe a little of my lack of interest (for Sonic at least) could be attributed to the hedgehogs various appearances on a multi-system level. I dont know, the game just feels kind of diluted by the lack of exclusitivity that he used to have. I presume the churning of constant sequels is down to the fact that Sonic is one of the very few remaining games from Sega that is guarenteed sales, their cash-cow, if you will.
Mario, on the other hand, took the transition to 3D very smoothly with the release of Mario64, and I struggle to name a 3D platformer that has beaten this game in terms of sheer playabilty. Everything just came together for this game, and to be fair was more than worth picking up an n64, for. Certainly a great demonstration for that console at the time, in terms of graphics and the continuing success of Nintendos franchise, the best thing is how well it stands up to time in terms of playability, and is a game I will quite happily pick up and play still.
Sunshine I wasnt entirely convinced about, and I level a similar arguement against the various GBA forays of Mario as I did against Sonic - mainly that Nintendo is guarenteed sales with it and they know full well as much. Not that Im saying the games are shit or anything, but again I disapprove of the constant output of similar games - especially at the extortionate rate that Nintendo charges for its handheld titles. Tsk.
Well, I dont know. I cant say I will ever get into either franchise as much as I once would, so my opinion is a fairly muted one. I still remember the tingles of excitement I gained from the knowledge that my parents had bought me a Megadrive and the Sonic cartridge for a Christmas present, and so I am uniquely swayed by the feeling of nostalgia that the first few games in the series undoubtedly bought to me. However, as I mentioned in my first paragraph, the gameplay of SMW quite possibly beat everything that Sega had produced before or since. But thats with hindsight, and had I played Super Mario World at the time of its release I would have (stupidly) disregarded it as it was - a Nintendo product.

i played mario when i was a child but sonic is also cool but i prefur
mario
I voted for Mario. I haven't played Sonic that much but after getting exposed to Mario so much from the Nes to the N64, I just love Mario.
I have tried playing Sonic games on Gens but sometimes he just goes out of control and running so fast that a person can't even see his enemies and eventually bumping into them and all that stuff.
May be I should give Sonic another try .
But for now, I go with Mario.
Edit: After my vote, Mario is in LEAD....Hurray....

I voted for Mario, just because it was the first game that was really addictive for me. Sonic is great too, but Mario games have something extra..
I go for Mario, as SMW rocked and his jump to the third drimension kicked ass. I'm not saying Sonic didn't pull it off well, but he hasn't come close to getting himself a game upto Super Mario 64 standards.

Yeah, and Sonic is a Hedgehog. So what?
Sure, Mario's a plumber. If you wanna be so narrow-minded as to define the character's worth through what he is, then why not take a look at our pal Sonic?
Now, I may be mistaken, but I don't think there's ever been a documented case in which a hedgehog has run at supersonic speeds.
The Hedgehog as defined in the Dictionary:
Any of several small insectivorous mammals of the family Erinaceidae of Europe, Africa, and Asia, having the back covered with dense erectile spines and characteristically rolling into a ball for protection.
So I guess it's just a small, spiney, bug eating mammal that rolls into a ball when he get's freaked out. Doesn't seem all that special to me. *shrugs*
Now, I'm not dissin' on Sonic, but if you're gonna tear Mario down just cause he's a plumber, you gotta take a look at Sonic too...

I'll go w/ mario since i grew up w/ the snes. I don't mind about non-inovation, as long as its new. Sonic for some reason just seams repetative.

Please read my long ass post. You'd see that Mario DID indeed innovate from game to game, if you suffered through that 6,000+ word post.Originally posted by PolskiBroli

On the other hand, how much did Sonic innovate...?
I'm not an authority on Sonic games, but Sonic 2 was pretty much the same as Sonic The Hedgehog (Not for resale!), except for the multiplayer aspect (Tails?) and Sonic 3 seemed to just come as a response to DKC's ACM graphics... Then came Sonic CD, which was... prettier... Then came Sonic-R, which was a foray into the mascot go-kart racer genre (albeit with no karts), probably initiated by Super Mario Kart... Then came Sonic Adventure, which was pretty much the same - with 3D graphics... Then came Sonic Shuffle... Need I say more...?
I must say I never totally liked the Sonic games... I'm the type of guy who likes to explore levels at detail and do as much as I can before venturing on to the next level... Rushing through a stage "blindfolded" never really gave me a sense of satisfaction and Sonic's platforming aspects were horrible, in my opinion ("bad jumping skills" anyone...? )...
Gameplay-wise, I prefer the Mario series...
That said, and speaking in simple terms of character design, I like both a lot! Sonic's got the right attitude (I just loved those DC ads) and Mario just boasts charisma with his jolly self (gotta love those "wahoo!"s and "mama mia!"s )!
I slightly prefer Mario... Now, where does Crash Bandicoot figure in on all this...? He was the unofficial mascot for the SONY PlayStation at some point, was he not...?
EDIT:
What about Atari's mascot...?

I would have to say Mario because when it was the first game I ever played. (SMB3) It just apealed to me and the way it was so unique is awesome. Honestly. How cant a fat plumber in a game be normal? I loved SMW even more and I love all the mario games. I havent tried Sunshine and probably never will but true classics like the old mario games never die. I was also enchanted when I first turned on my N64. I was playing Super Mario 64. I couldnt use the control stick worth crap. Anyways Mario gets my vote all the way and it will always be like that. I mean, sonic games are good and i do own quite a few but they werent AS good as Mario in my eyes.
