Default Are Video Games a Bad Influence?

After a talk with my grandmother about the video games I play, I wanted to hear other people's opinions about the influence of video games on people. Do you think it's bad? Or do you think it's 100% bullcrap and people only follow what they hear in the news and on TV? Post your opinion here.

if you're old enough to buy your own games, to fully understand the games, then i think you're old enough to know its just a game and nothing more and shouldn't let a video game influence you in your daily life.

I'm pretty young myself (only 12 going on 13) and I understand that what people do in the video games shouldn't influence people. (It's downright evil and wrong. Well, depending on the game.) Also note, that if you are influenced by a game, you're either, A. Too young or B. Too gullible. If you think things through, you'll realize it's just a game, and you'll move on. (I just hope others feel the same.)

u know, this discussion is making me rethink letting my 7 year old nephew playing games. i mean, he doesn't play games like silent hill or resident evil, he plays things like luigi's mansion, ninja turtles, etc. i recently let him play some wrestling games and dbz budokai games, but....i see no influence in him so far other than the need to kick my butt whenever i beat him. i don't even see any changes in his education. he's getting very good grades and does all his work, knows when its play time and work time.

well if a game is violent, it doesn't necesarrily have a bad influence. gta may inspire a little kid to take his dad's gun or something of that sort. although, if you take a game like mortal kombat, a little kid isn't gonna go pull out somebody's heart or turn into a dragon and bite of somebody's torso.

it really depends. Some kids have a problem telling fantasy from reality it's upto the parent to determine if there kid can handle it. Getting the government into this issue here in the US is not going to solve a thing. Parents need to get off there ass and learn about there kids mental stability.

Kids with problems are in the minority though most can handle violence very well. Myself for example grew up on watching horror movies. I was a huge fan of Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th and Texas Chainsaw Massacre when I was 6 years old! My parents would take me to see R rated movies at theatres all the time when I was 9. there really wasn't any violent games back then because graphics weren't good enough to display violence like today until Wolfenstien 3D and Doom though i was still about 12 by then and loved those games. I had already seen way worse then Doom by then in movies so it seemed really tame to me and never quite got the media hype with it.

Games can be bad, but usually they are benign, and sometimes they can be a positive influence as well.. The same thing applies to books, or television, or clothing, or pornography, or partying, or laws. Basically everything on the planet. Everything is relative, and if Catholic School taught me anything (aside from the fact that some priests ARE sick sick people,) it's that moderation and prudence really are the most important factors in anything and everything you do...

I agree that some games are bad and some aren't. But it depends on the person who plays. They mostly take your time, if you're sitting in front of the computer/console for 24 hours/day. But if you know when to stop, it's okay I guess.

That's why I don't understand people who cry at the Aeris-getting-stabbed scene in FF7... and I didn't actually think there were any. FF7 isn't even convincing, anyway, even the top-of-the-line games nowadays aren't immersive enough. Doom3 and Half-Life 2 come close, but I never once felt that I was part of a game... Probably there was one, quite some time ago, but I don't remember now. That's why I sometimes enjoy games much more that don't pretend to be "real", just those that are simply games, you know, arrange falling blocks, that sort.

No games are not bad. Stupid people who play games and think the same shit applies in real life are bad. Small children who have access to GTA because of stupid parenting are bad. Think of it this way: Everyone saw Ron Artest's fight a few months back right? How many kids ended up in the news for throwing cups at people? Zero. People play games and if they are stupid enough to go and emulate what they saw, it's THEIR fault entirely. Entirely.

I agree with GareJei, it depends mostly on the people that play the game, some people are easily influenced, they are an easy target not only for certain videogames but also movies, tv shows.. as brit said its entirely their fault or their guardian's fault if they are minors.
